Sin Will Cost You Everything

All of us need to think more deeply about the cost of sin. Without a doubt, sin can have a lot of appealing qualities. You think about it, sin something that is popular (1 Pet. 4:3), sin is something that is promoted (Gal. 5:19-21), and sin is something that is pleasurable (Heb. 11:25). Certainly, from a worldly perspective sin seems like it’s the greatest route anyone could take. However, when we understand the full cost of sin, we recognize sin is something everyone needs to get out of their life. With that in mind, let us consider the cost of sin from the very first time it was committed.

What did sin cost Adam and Eve? Number one, sin cost them their innocence. In Genesis 3:7 the Bible says, “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.” Before Adam and Eve partook of the fruit, they were innocent and pure in the eyes of God, but when sin was committed that changed in an instant.

What did sin cost Adam and Eve? Number two, sin cost them their confidence. Before sin took place, Adam and Eve had a great relationship with God. However, when sin occurred, Adam and Eve hid themselves from the Lord (Gen. 3:8-10). What happened? They lost their confidence because of sin.

The third charge sin gave to Adam and Eve’s account was their allegiance. In Genesis 3:12 the text says, “Then the man said, ‘The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.’” In an instant this couple was no longer devoted to one another because of sin.

What else did sin cost Adam and Eve? Number four, sin cost them their dependence. Prior to sin being committed Adam and Eve were fully dependent on the Lord and His instructions (Gen. 2:16, 17). That all changed though when sin entered the world. Instead of depending on God’s word, Adam and Eve depended on the lie of the great deceiver (Gen. 3:13).

The fifth charge to Adam and Eve’s account is the worst of all. In Genesis 3:19 God said, “For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” Ultimately, this is the greatest cost of sin (Rom. 6:23). Spiritual death for all eternity is the price that will be paid for lawlessness.

Finally, sin cost Adam and Eve their presence. It has been said, the garden of Eden was the most beautiful place on earth, and sin earned Adam and Eve an eviction. In Genesis 3:23, 24 the Bible says, “the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. Sin cost Adam and Eve their presence in the garden of Eden.

Sometimes when we think about sin, all we can think about is the appealing qualities that it possesses, but we must count the cost. As the old saying goes, “Sin takes you farther than you ever intended to go, it keeps you longer than you ever intended to stay, and it cost you more than you ever intended to pay.”
