Don't Say This on Judgment Day

In the world we live in today excuses are extremely common; one might even say excuses are just as prevalent as death and taxes. In fact, it would be fair to say we have all offered an excuse at some point in our lives. The truth is, excuses are normal, they are commonplace, and they are a part of the everyday vernacular. Did you know though, one day no matter what excuses are offered, none of them will be accepted? Sure, today we might be able to get away with excuses such as, “I forgot” or “I was busy with other things,” but on the day of judgment no statement of the such will fly with the Lord. With that being said, let us consider some common excuses that might be given on the day of judgment, and why they are not valid.

First, an excuse that might be offered on the day of judgment is, “I did not know.” Whenever a guilty soul stands in the presence of the Almighty God (2 Cor. 5:10), those might be the words that come out of their mouth. However, it is critical for us to remember, whether we believed in God or not, all men are going to be held accountable. That was the very point that Paul made when he said, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). Brethren and friends, the creation bears witness to God’s existence, therefore no one will be able to say, “I did not know” and be accepted into heaven.

Second, an excuse that might be offered on the day of judgment is, “I did not have a miracle.” How many times have people said something to the effect of, “If I only saw a miracle I would believe” or “If God would miraculously heal me, I would give my life over to Him?” The truth of the matter is, people say things like that all the time, but once again, that is not a valid excuse. You will remember, when the rich man was in torment, he begged Abraham to send someone back to warn his brothers about eternity, but Abraham replied, “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead” (Luke 16:31). What is the point? The point is, God’s Word is all-sufficient for a soul to be on the right side of eternity. If we rely on miracles to be saved, we will never be saved.

Finally, an excuse that might be offered on the day of judgment is, “I followed those who I loved and respected.” In times past many have said, “Well my mother and father were a part of this denomination, so that is what I am going to do too.” Friends, there is no doubt many parents want the absolute best for their children, but we need to remember there is only one Man to follow when it comes to eternity. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is no debating the fact, Jesus is the only means by which we can be with God the Father. Do not let your parents be the reason you squander heaven.

There’s not a day that goes by on this earth that an excuse is not offered. However, we would be wise unto eternity if we remember on the day of judgment that will not be the case!
